The Importance of Community

There is a epidemic in the single mom community: isolation. We are all just so busy trying to make it through each day with our sanity (or what’s left of it). We’re trying our best to keep our children fed, clean and happy (ok fed). Basically we’re just trying to survive. I get that ladies. But the problem is that when we are so focused on ourselves and our struggles we forget something that’s really important: community. Here’s my message for my fellow single sisters out there: We are not islands!

Healing/Support

One reason that it’s important to reach out to one another is for healing and support. Who will understand the things that you are going through better than someone that is walking the same path. I was talking with another single mom friend the other day and I said to her, “I just wish I could have a day just for me. Even when the boys are gone there’s so much to do.” She sat across from me and just silently nodded her head. She got it.

There is something really beautiful about people sharing their brokenness with each other and encouraging each other as they heal. Think about it, why do you read the books, blogs, or articles that you do? I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that there’s something that speaks to you, that let’s you know that you are not alone.

Growth

Being a part of a community promotes growth. We were created for relationships and we don’t do well without them. This was a hard lesson for me to learn. I’m an introvert and tend to be a bit of a loner. And as a mom of two young boys and full-time student I found myself alone all the time. It’s not healthy! Recently I joined a really awesome church, started attending small group bible study and just starting reaching out more often. It’s been wonderful. I have made some beautiful friendships and feel a lot better about myself. The first step is a little daunting but it’s totally worth it!

Pay it Forward

Here’s the most important reason to reach out for community: the people that you’ll help along the way. For the longest time I questioned why I went through all the pain and heartache of the last few years. It’s for you sweet sister. We go through our trials so that we can tell someone else that it’s possible to survive.
