Recently I wrapped my orange pumpkin kitty in a towel – due to my husband’s allergies he’s an outside kitty- and we sat inside by the fire for a rare snuggle. He turned into a purring puddle of liquid joy, it was a happy moment for us both!
Why? Because he was with me.
We can learn a lot from cats. As I sat cozy in my warm, twinkly living room I was mesmerized by my his contentment. His eyes turned to slits and his hands kneaded a happy dance on my arm. His pleasure brought me pleasure.
I couldn’t help but think of the chaotic swirl of holiday festivities we all get caught up in, just so we can ‘celebrate’ Jesus birth. But I wonder if our Father isn’t simply looking for lap time. Those tender moments in his presence where joy spills over us and we bubble up songs of love and thanks. Our hearts are blessed, his heart is blessed, and we savor the intimacy Emanuel came to purchase.
Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son. Ephesians 1:4-6
There is nothing wrong with dozens of sugar cookies, family traditions, bright lights, and all of the wonderful sights and sounds of the season. But what a shame it would be if in the swirl of our schedules we missed out on the opportunity to embrace the gift of relationship with God. A relationship purchased by The Child. What a disappointment it would be if we enjoyed all the things and missed out on enjoying the Person.
Not only will our hearts be better because they’ve been filled to the brim with love, but as that love comes splashing out our families and church communities will be the better because of our time with God as well.
Have you experienced joy in God’s presence in the past week? Let’s take a hint from my kitty and seek out lap time with our Heavenly Father today.
